Admission Review

There is no secret formula for admission to BYU. All applications go through a holistic review, meaning everything in the application is considered. Take the application for admission seriously and tell us about yourself! If there is something specific you would like the committee to know, be sure to tell us in your application. Make sure the work is your own and be thorough. Your application, including your essays, should demonstrate your preparation in the aims of a BYU education. Application Tip: As you write your essays answer the prompts, but find ways to show us how you personally embody the four Aims. Let us know the real you, that is who we want!

Scholarships & Financial Aid

To be considered for a scholarship, you need to do two things in addition to applying for admission – be sure to follow the links below for more information:

1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

We encourage all individuals to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, even if you think you won't qualify! You may be eligible for money you never have to pay back. A submitted FAFSA is required to be considered for all federal aid and many BYU awards (including Cougar Pell Promise – see below!)

2. Submit the BYU Scholarship Application

Prospective students must complete a scholarship application by the scholarship application deadline to be considered. The more sections you fill out, the more scholarships you will be considered for, including academic, need based, and private scholarships!

Cougar Pell Promise

You may not have to pay for a single penny in tuition for 8 semesters through the Cougar Pell Promise! Over one-third of enrolled, new freshmen receive a scholarship from BYU. Additionally, BYU will assist in meeting full Latter-day Saint tuition costs for newly admitted freshmen who:

  • Apply for admission directly out of high school
  • Submit the FAFSA by the appropriate scholarship deadline, and qualify for an initial
    Federal Pell Grant
  • Remain in good academic standing (maintain a cumulative 2.00 BYU GPA)

Students who qualify for the Cougar Pell Promise will have their tuition costs met each year. Specific details and requirements may be found at cougarpellpromise.byu.edu.

Scholarship Universe

Create an account and gain access to thousands of scholarship opportunities!

Work

You can earn money for school and other expenses by working! Over 50% of BYU students work on campus as tour guides, Chick-fil-A workers, graphic designers, researchers, teacher assistants, sports recruiters, and more!

Loans

We all love free money, but sadly a loan is not free. If needed, it is acceptable to take out a modest loan to receive an education. Consider these things before you borrow. “Some debt—such as for a modest home, expenses for education, perhaps for a needed first car—may be necessary. But never should we enter into financial bondage through consumer debt without carefully weighing the costs.” -Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin

BYU exists to provide an education in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In compliance with applicable state and federal nondiscrimination laws (e.g., Title VI, Title IX, and Section 504), BYU prohibits unlawful discrimination in employment, education, and all university-sponsored programs or activities. To maintain an educational atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a lawful admission preference is given to members of the Church in good standing.

Questions or complaints about unlawful discrimination on the basis of sex (including sexual harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct) may be referred to the Title IX coordinator at 1085 WSC, 801-422-8692, or t9coordinator@byu.edu. Questions or complaints about unlawful discrimination on any other basis listed above may be referred to the equal opportunity manager at D-282 ASB, 801-422-5895, eo_manager@byu.edu.
